Children’s Programs CCA is committed to the many children served by our programs. After-school programs are available on selected days at our Hillside Family Shelter and Stepping Stone sites. These programs focus on nurturing the children and helping them develop the skills they will need to succeed in school and in their interactions with other children and adults. The program also includes mentoring and tutoring. CCA also offers a Children’s Summer Program that brings together children from all the housing program sites for a five-week "camp" focused on the development of socialization skills. Activities include arts, crafts, games and field trips. For more information about this program, contact Shellina Toure, Assistant Director at (203) 777-7167 or stoure@ccahelping.org for the Stepping Stone children’s program Lillian Marquez, Director of Emergency Services at (203) 777-7173; or lmarquez@ccahelping.org for Hillside Family Service children’s programs.
Thanksgiving Distribution For more than 35 years, Christian Community Action, has been providing turkeys and all the fixings for a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal to more than 1,700 families, seniors and persons with disabilities, all low-income. This year (2012), with support from the accounting / tax/ business consulting firm of BlumShapiro (our presenting sponsor), News 8 WTNH (our media partner), The Connecticut Food Bank and dozens of businesses, churches, schools, civic organizations and individuals, we collected and distributed bags of holiday-related food and turkeys to more than 2,333 families, seniors and persons with disabilities. Since the average size of the families we served was four people, we estimate more than 8,000 people, nearly 50 percent children, benefited from this initiative. Please plan on joining us in the Fall of 2013 when we again will seek to make sure people who are poor are able to enjoy a holiday meal with loved ones, just like the rest of us. Watch our website / newsletter / Facebook page for announcements beginning in September. |
