Two decades ago, Mr. Marsalis composed and recorded In This House, On This Morning and began a creative exploration of how to reflect the forms of the African American church service onto a theme of universal humanism while raising “a joyful noise.”

Mr. Marsalis refined this integration of sacred and secular expression in Abyssinian 200: A Celebration, commissioned by the Abyssinian Baptist Church on West 138th Street in Harlem to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2008.

After a triumphant performance in London’s Barbican Centre, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis brings fresh eyes and ears to this masterwork, now called Abyssinian: A Gospel Celebration!

The sensational conductor Damien Sneed leads Chorale Le Chateau, his 70-person gospel choir, through the demanding compendium of shouts, chants, and joyous expressions required by this composition.

In its review in 2008, The New York Times called the work, “an elaborate concert piece that transverses jazz history, from spirituals to Big Band …to modernist variants of New Orleans dirges and struts.”

Mr. Marsalis “knows harmony and rhythm the way a grandmaster knows chess,” The Times said.

Tickets are $100; $75; $45; $30 and $20 and are on sale now in person at The Shubert Theater Box Office, 247 College Street, New Haven, CT or by calling (203) 562-5666 or 1-(888)-736-2663.
